Chicago Trip

Home to Chicago for a few days in March and I’m the only kid there! Very rare to have Mom and Dad to myself in Oak Park, we tried to make the most of it.

Upon arrival, Dad picked me up from Midway and we grabbed lunch at two excellent taqueiras: Los Barrelitos (for tacos al pastor) and La Chaparrita (for tripas crujientes).

For dinner we had Chicago’s #2 burger at the Loyalist…too dark for a good photo, but it was a great burger. And then I showed Mom & Dad my favorite Chicago restaurant that I’ve only eaten at once, the Global McDonalds.

The next day Mom and I rode downtown to meet Dad at Topolobampo for lunch…read about that soon on my food instagram, @steadilyeating.

Then we walked over to Dad’s office…

Then Mom and Dad dropped me off at the Art Institute where I discovered it was a lot bigger than I remembered.

Then I walked over to the nearby Chicago Cultural Center, which I had never been to before. I found it to be extremely good.

Train ride home to Chicken Curry Casserole!

The next morning I went and had a wonderful, wonderful lunch at Carnitas El Orinoco. Wow! Consider this place a must visit! Pure pig heaven.

And that night: Our return to Parachute. First visit a few years ago was an A++, this one was a B+. Yo I know menus need to change but why would you take something like a real nice little steak off the menu? You know people are going to want some meat with their meaty rice cakes. (But also the meaty rice cakes were nice).

Ok, coming up: Utah, New York, Las Vegas, Utah, New York!

When I Was in Town During February and March

Well, this blog is falling into a pattern: Either I’m posting about being at home, in California, or in Utah, or I’m posting what I did between one of those trips. This post is a betweener.

I got back from California in time to celebrate cake being leftover from Tara’s birthday party.

AMC A-List has got me seeing lots of movies.

One night John Tarbet had a recital at Columbia. I hadn’t heard him perform in, oh, 11 years?

This one afternoon I walked by the new Hudson Yards buildings to go hear Jason speak about building the Hudson Yards buildings.

Took advantage of the opportunity to have a little Chelsea Gallery lookaround

Here’s some miscellaneous miscellaneous February pics:

One last thing to show you before I fly off to Chicago: Neighbor Ned got a niiiice new Sony Camera so we went around shooting up Farmers Market and Inwood Hill one Saturday morning.

On the docket for upcoming posts: Chicago, Utah, New York, Las Vegas, Utah, New York!

February Break, pt. 3

And so, yes, I flew to Los Angeles. Grandma and I met with Cousin Jim at El Habañero, a taco shop across the street from the Boat I was curious about. And my curiosity was rewarded! Tacos were quite good, I’d be glad to go back sometime.

Driving through San Marino, past my alma mater, down to Alhambra for a haircut and a visit to the pet store…

And then I went over to Aunt Louise’s for a visit and a look at some old Condie family treasures. And Bunker treasures.

That night I went down to Korea Town for some great tacos from Tacos 1986 and a pretty good pattymelt from Cassell’s.

The next morning, a hike through Griffith Park with Cher followed by lunch at Dune and a little walking around of Atwater Village.

Most other mornings I’d take a walk to San Marino to see the Cal Tech turtles. Here’s a combination of all those walks:

A major thing that happened while I was in LA is I started eating at Burgers Must Die. These crispy smash burgers drove me nuts. A++, 10/10, So Good!

Wednesday night? Bulldogs at Yaki’s with Collin

Thursday morning I put an egg on a tamal and went to the Santa Anita mall to watch Battle Angel Alita while Grandma hosted DUP. That mall doesn’t look anything like I remember.

Friday evening: Highland Park taco crawl with Lucas after a little Burgers Never Say Die pregame

Then Saturday I went to Disneyland. That’s probably it’s own post. Sunday, church with grandma and a flight back to New York.
